Skyblock Tutorial

From MCLabs

SkyLabs is our unique version of Skyblock, with a chemical-themed twist. Starting with a tiny island, a few blocks, and a handful of items, your goal is to expand your island, increase its level, complete challenges, and rank up, all of which will earn you access to new items, blocks, and abilities that will help further shape and grow your island in a unique way.

You can get to SkyLabs by doing /skyblock from any world.

Quick Start Guide

Don't want to read the whole tutorial? We recommend coming back to read specific parts later, but if you just want to get into playing, here's what you need to know:

  • Use /is to get to your island. This is your own island, though you can invite others with the /is team commands (note that you can only have one island, if you join someone else's then you will lose yours)
  • Your island level is the rough value of your island and represents your progress. Most blocks have value (/value) that increase your island level when placed.
  • See what you unlock at each island level with /progress.
  • Chems are unlocked at specific island levels, and cannot be planted until you unlock them. They also require the block you're planting them on to be fertilized. Fertilizer can be made by placing organic materials into composters. See /recipes for how to craft composters, and /compost for which items can be composted.
  • Generators give you access to new blocks and materials. See /gen to activate different cobblestone generator types. Check /recipes for the recipes to craft Jungle Wood generators.
  • Complete island challenges of varying difficulty for useful rewards with /challenges.

Getting Started

Skyblock Basics

A fresh island.

To start off, use /is to get your island. Everyone starts with the same basic island, and the following starting items:

  • 9 dirt/grass blocks.
  • 3 sand blocks.
  • An oak tree and oak sapling.
  • Two ice blocks and one lava bucket.
  • Two wheat seeds
  • Six mushroom stew.

Your goal is to use these items to expand your island. The first thing you want to do (after chopping down your tree for wood) is set up a cobblestone generator. This will give you access to infinite cobblestone (and some other items, see "Generators" below) to increase the size and level of your island.

Island Level

Your island level is the rough value of your entire island. Almost every block you place on your island has value, and your island level is based on the total value of all placed blocks on your island. Your island level will automatically calculate and update every few minutes, but you can also update it manually at any time with /level.

Block Value

Most blocks are worth points that add to your island level when placed on your island.

Some blocks have a cap on the amount of island points that you'll receive from having them on your island. For example, metal/mineral blocks (iron blocks, diamond blocks, etc.) are limited at 50,000 points each. This means that once you have, say, 50,000 points in iron blocks placed on your island, placing additional iron blocks will not further increase your island level.

To see the value of a block, hold it in your hand and use /value.

Level Unlocks

Representing the value and size of your island, your island level is an estimate of how far you have progressed. Many things, including chems, generators, fertilizers, and more, are unlocked at specific island levels. As you reach higher island levels, you'll unlock these things automatically.

To see where you are in terms of island level progression and what you get at each island level, use /progress.

Generators

Generators are the main method of acquiring new items to build and expand your island. There are a few different types of generators, each with different reqiurements and harvesting methods.

Cobblestone Generators

The generator menu (/gen).

Use the /gen command to activate different generators that change what your cobblestone generator makes. The basic Dirty Cobble Generator that you start with will produce mostly cobble, along with a little bit of dirt, and rarely potatoes, carrots, and cocoa beans.

Ore Generators

Cobblestone generators are the main way of farming ores like coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, emerald, and diamond. Upon reaching island level 5, you unlock the Tier I Ore Generator, giving you access to farmable coal and iron ore. Better ores are unlocked through higher Ore Generator tiers at higher island levels.

Soil Generators

Along with ores, the cobblestone generator can be used to farm soils like dirt and sand. You unlock the Tier I Soil Generator at island level 5, which creates more dirt than the Dirty Cobble Generator.

You can only have one of either an ore generator or soil generator activated at once.

Jungle Wood Generators

Being a requirement to farm cocoa beans, jungle wood can't simply be farmed with jungle saplings. Instead, jungle wood is obtainable only through Jungle Wood Generators. These generators can be crafted (see /recipes for the recipe) and placed on your island, where they'll start generating jungle wood and leaves. Higher tier Jungle Wood Generators will produce jungle wood quicker.

Basalt Generators

Once you get to the Nether, you can start using basalt generators, which will give you access to many of the blocks from the nether, including netherite.

Chems

As your island grows, you'll have more space to grow chems. Skyblock shares the same type of raw chems as the main gamemode, all of which can be grown on your island and sold at /spawn in the shops area. Growing chems on Skyblock is a bit different from vanilla growing mechanics, requiring a few more steps.

Selling Chems

Selling chems on SkyLabs is much easier than selling them on the main gamemode. To sell your chems, go to /spawn and follow the redstone trail to the shop island. Here you'll find the Chem Dealer NPC, who you can sell your chems to.

Unlocking Chems

You start off only able to grow wheat. Even if you obtain seeds for other chems, you won't be able to plant them until your island level is high enough.

Chems are unlocked at the following island levels:

  • Wheatium: Level 0
  • Carrotoenium: Level 5
  • Potatium: Level 10
  • Cocobium: Level 20
  • Canium: Level 30
  • Cactium: Level 40
  • Nethwartium: Level 50 (Nether only)
  • Betronium: Level 60
  • Pumpkonium: Level 70
  • Melonium: Level 80
  • Shroomium R/B: Level 90
  • Chorufrium: Level 100 (End only)

As you approach island levels that unlock new chems, your generators will start to very rarely drop new chems (see the "Treasures" section of the generator description).

Fertilizer

Once you have a chem unlocked, you can't just plant it like you normally would; you need to fertilize the farmland. Fertilizer is made by composters (see below) and will fertilize your farmland for a limited time, spanning from 20 minutes with Poor Fertilizer to 36 hours with Legendary Fertilizer.

To fertilize the block you want to plant a chem on, right-click the block with fertilizer in your hand. You should get a message, particle effect, and sound. You can right-click a block to see if it's fertilized, and how much longer it will stay fertilized for if it is.

Composting

Fertilizer is produced by composters. Most organic materials can be composted by right-clicking them into a composter, with some items filling the composter up more than others. See /compost for a list of items that can be composted and their compost value. Once a composter is filled up, you'll have to wait some time (higher tier composters are quicker), and then right-click the composter to extract the fertilizer.

There are 7 tiers of composter, with the first tier being craftable right from the start. To see how to make each composter, use /recipes. You'll need some mob drops for the first composter, so it's a good idea to get a mob farm started as early as possible.

As your island level increases, so does the quality of your fertilizer. For example, you start with Poor Fertilizer, which fertilizes for 20 minutes, and unlock Decent Fertilizer at island level 13, which fertilizes for 1 hour. There are five fertilizer qualities: Poor (20 minutes), Decent (1 hour), Standard (4 hours), Quality (12 hours), and Legendary (36 hours).

Challenges

The island challenge menu.

Challenges are one of the main ways to access many items, blocks, and special items that you would otherwise have no way to obtain. You can view the challenges while on your island with the /challenges command.

Challenge Levels

Challenges are divided into six levels: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert, and Expert. Each level is roughly split into a specific range of island levels. For example, the Beginner challenges can all be completed before reaching island level 5, the Novice challenges before level 15, etc. In order to unlock a challenge level, you must complete at least all except one of the challenges in the previous level (e.g. if there are 10 Beginner challenges, you must complete at least 9 of them to unlock the Novice challenges).

Completing Challenges

Once you have met the requirements for a challenge, complete it by simply clicking it in the /challenges menu. If you have everything you need, you'll instantly get the challenge reward, so make sure you have some inventory room open. If you're lacking any of the requirements, you'll be told what you need.

There are two main types of challenges: inventory challenges and island challenges.

Inventory Challenges

Inventory challenges require you to have particular items in your inventory. The challenge will list which items are required. Often, the items will be removed from your inventory upon completing the challenge.

Island Challenges

Island challenges require you to have specific blocks or entities on your island. The challenge will list which blocks/entities you need, and how close they must be to you when you complete the challenge. The blocks/entities usually won't be removed, but for some challenges they will.

Entropy

What is Entropy?

Entropy is used as the fishings custom currency. You earn this in many forms and is used to craft augments and upgrade your deliveries in /fish deliveries.

Entropy is essential to your entire experience within fishing. Without it, you cannot upgrade your deliveries or craft augments.

How to earn Entropy

There are many ways to earn entropy in SkyLabs. Below is a table outlining all of the possible ways to earn Entropy from fish themselves.

Tier Catching Fish Gutting Fish
Bronze 45 40
Silver 110 120
Gold 200 200
Diamond 350 500
Platinum 1250 1000
Mythical 10000 Not Guttable

Fish Sell Shop

Sell all your fishes!

The fish sell shop is access by either doing /fish shop or by opening the /fish menu and clicked on the chest. The fish shop allows you to sell up to 20 fish at a time and varies based on weight and rarity. There is always a special fish on order for a multiplier, so be sure to check that out at the bottom of the GUI!

Rarity Price
Raw Fish $5
Bronze Tier Fish $10
Silver Tier Fish $55
Gold Tier Fish $150
Diamond Tier Fish $500
Platinum Tier Fish $1000
Mythical Tier Fish $2500

Deliveries

Deliveries are one of the key ways to earn money and entropy. You can find deliveries every 180 fish that you catch. Deliveries require different fish so make sure to trade between players!

How do you earn deliveries?

You can earn a new delivery every 180 custom fish that you catch. Once you catch enough fish, a message will appear in chat alerting you to your new delivery. You can also view how many fish you need until your next delivery inside of the fish menu by hovering over the delivery icon.

How do deliveries work?

Deliveries are a very simple concept to understand. You hand in the fish, and collect the reward! For clarification:

  • Get a delivery by catching 180 custom fish.
  • Catch, trade, buy, or obtain the fish needed for the delivery by some means.
  • Click on the delivery to start it. This will consume the fish and remove them from your inventory.
  • Wait until the timer has finished.
  • Collect your reward by clicking on the icon in the delivery menu.

Upgrades

There are five distinctive upgrades that aid you when completing and earning deliveries. They are outlined below:

Upgrade Description
Increase Capacity Increases the amount of deliveries you can hold at one time.
Overclocked Reduces the time taken to deliver all of the deliveries.
Expert Deliverer Reduces the fish needed for deliveries.
Pay Rise Increases the entropy reward from completing deliveries.
Lucky Charm Reduces the amount of fish needed to earn a new delivery.

It is recommended that you upgrade Lucky Charm and Increase Capacity first to maximize the amount of deliveries that you can earn.

The fishing bag is currently disabled.

Fishing Skills

What are skills?

Within SkyLabs, there are currently 10 different skills that you can upgrade that will benefit different areas of the fishing experience as you upgrade them. To upgrade skills, you require Skill Points. You earn one Skill Point every time you level up. To access the skills menu in game - type /fish skills or click on the icon in the main menu.

Types of Skills

There are currently two different types of skills, and each have different impacts, and leveling up features attached to them.

Upgradeable Skills

There are currently 5 Upgradeable Skills. These cost one point to upgrade each time and give diminishing returns based on how many points you spend on that skill. It is recommended that you balance your points equally to begin with, and then re-spec into specific skills once you have a large quantity of them available to you.

One-Time Purchase Skills

These skills act as a 'passive' effect rather than a skill. These cost a flat amount of Skill Points to purchase. After you have purchased it, that skill is forever active for you.

However - these skills scale with your Fishing Level. This means that the higher the Fishing Level you are, the better these skills will perform. To maximize these skills, try leveling up as much as you can!

Bait Store

Currently not implemented. Stay tuned for more information!

Augments

What are Augments?

Augments are essentially custom enchantments that are crafted using a cauldron. These can only be applied to Fishing Rods currently and enhance different aspects of Skyblock Fishing when used.

How to Craft Augments

All you have to do to craft augments is throw all of the required items into a cauldron. Easy!

Totems

Totems are structures that can be built near a fishing area that grant various boosts/perks like increased experience rates, increased drop rates, and many more.

Fishing Totems require a 20 fishing level to activate, but can be built whenever you have the necessary resources. You can see the blocks needed by doing /fish menu and clicking the totem icon.

Activating your Totem

To activate your totem you will need at least the following:

  • x16 Dolphin Tails
  • x16 Crab Claws
  • x16 Crab Scales
  • x16 Squid Tentacles
  • x6 of any platinum tier fish.

Once you have the items above and the required level, you will need to build the multiblock structure in your totem menu. Once you have built the Fishing Totem, using a fishing rod, hit the bottom observer and it should activate, or give you an error message depending on what you are missing.

I activated my totem - now what?

The Fishing Totem provides many different benefits to the user. However, some of these require Entropy to upgrade and others require a high fishing level. These can be broken down into three sections:

Totem Upgrades

The Fishing Totem has three main upgrades that cost Entropy. They are listed below. The maximum column is what you can expect if you level up an upgrade to its maximum level.

Upgrade Initial Cost Extra Cost Maximum What It Does
Radius 150,000 75,000 30 Blocks This extends the radius that you can stand inside to get Totem Buffs.
Cooldown 125,000 125,000 39 Minutes This lowers the initial cooldown from 60 minutes.
Active Time 175,000 125,000 25 Minutes This extends the time the Totem Buffs are active for.

You can use the formula initialCost + (extraCost x level) to calculate the cost of the next upgrade. For example, upgrading radius to level 5 would be 150,000 + (75,000 x 5) = 525,000 Entropy for the 5th level.

Passive Slots

Passive slots are very important as you need these to activate totem passives. You can have a maximum of 15 passive slots at max level; allowing you to activate a multitude of passives. To obtain a new passive slot, you require either:

Requirement Amount Per Level
Platinum Fish x7
Mythical Fish x1

Please note that after every level you upgrade, the cost will stack. For example, if you have two passive slots already, the third one will cost either:

  • x3 Mythical Fish or
  • x21 Platinum Fish

Note: You cannot mix and match fish, e.g. 1 Mythical and 14 Platinum. They must be of the same tier to work.

Totem Passives

Passives are separate from upgrades and don't require Entropy to upgrade or use. They instead require different Fishing Levels and passive slots to activate. Below is a list of passive, the required level, passive slot cost, and what it does.

Passive Level Slots What It Does
Experienced Fisherman 20 1 This increases experienced gained from fishing by 1.5x while the totem is active.
Little Critters 40 2 This increases the drop chance of crab goods whenever you kill a crab in the radius of your totem.
Fish Schools 40 3 Increases the chance of Hot Spot and Call of the Storm activating by 35%.
Random Drops 55 4 This gives you a chance to get other fishing loot such as squid tentacles or dolphin tails from killing crabs.
Treasure Hunter 60 5 This gives you a 1% chance to find rare items while fishing.
Mythical Waters 60 5 Whenever you catch a fish, this has a 20% chance to upgrade it to a higher rarity.
Entropy Hoarder 60 6 This increases entropy you get from fishing by 1.25x.
Star Fall 100 10 Not currently implemented - stay tuned.
